Fans Are Running But There's No Output11/22/2016The Magnetek GPD 505 AC drive is one of many series of drives that we repair at Precision Electronic Services. This case study is from a repair of a model GPD505V-B052, which is a 480 volt 52 amp drive rated at 40 horsepower. The symptom reported by the user was that the fans were running but there was no drive output. There was also no charge light illuminated. The user also reported that the drive had a burnt fuse on the power supply due to a power surge to which the drive had been subjected. If you experience problems of this nature due to a power surge or a spike in the incoming line voltage, one of the first things to check is the incoming voltage to see if it is within the normal operating range for the drive. The operating fans do indicate that the drive is still getting power. You should also check to see if there is any kind of display on the drive. In this case it was not reported either way. Once we received the drive for repair, we did verify that the fans were working but the rest of the drive was completely dead with no operation or indication at all. This is possible because the fans are powered by an AC transformer directly from the incoming line voltage, and not dependent on DC buss voltage, which was not present in the drive. The evaluation revealed that all three integrated gated bi-polar transistor modules were blown. Other discoveries made from the initial evaluation was the fact that the precharge resistor, sometimes called the soft charge resistor, was open. And even though the fans were rotating, they were very noisy and mostly clogged with debris. The drive also had a broken power terminal block that was in need of replacement.During the course of the repair, we replaced all three of the IGBT modules, repaired the damage on both the power supply board and control board and did a complete refurbishment of both. Refurbishment consists of replacing any and all components that are subject to deteriorate due to use and environmental conditions causing them to become aged or measure outside their rated tolerances. Even though the cooling fans were operational, we also replaced them because they were noisy and partially clogged and not operating at a level to keep the Magnetek drive adequately cooled. The broken power terminal block was also replaced so that the drive’s power wiring would not be compromised in any way.Once the drive repairs are completed, it is checked out at a technician’s work bench. Power is applied, inputs and outputs are checked. The keypad and other functions are tested to be sure the GPD 505 is ready to be load tested.Dynamic load testing is completed on motor loaders that have been custom engineered and built by PES. We take this additional step in testing to ensure that the repaired drive will be able to run at its rated capacity when the user reinstalls it. Even after this final stage of testing, the repair is still not yet complete. Before this or any control is released for return shipping to a customer, it must undergo a stringent quality control inspection. Only after is passes this inspection is it considered to be complete and ready to return to the user. Call on the repair experts at 800-732-4695. Back To Blog
